The City of Oslo Wins the E-Visionary Awards 2023 for Europe

The City of Oslo won this year’s E-Visionary Awards 2023. The winner was announced during the closing ceremony of the 36th Edition of the Electric Vehicles Symposium in Sacramento, California. Mr Audun Garberg, Vice Director and Head of the Climate Department at Oslo’s Agency for Climate represented the municipality as the prize was awarded.

We are deeply honoured. Last year, 55 percent of construction works commissioned by the City was zero emission. We have heavy duty electric excavators and trucks at work at construction sites across the city. By 2025 we aim for all public construction to be electric, and for private real estate developers to follow on by 2030. Now we hope for other stakeholders to engage and work together to speed up this transition”, he commented.

Already known as the Electric Vehicle Capital of the World and Host of EVS35, Oslo receives the e-visionary award for the second time in 10 years. Since the last award, the city has continued to be a global inspiration and an e-visionary, systematically replacing combustion engine vehicles with electric ones: cars, buses, ferries, taxis and the city’s fleet of cars and vans.

But the jury selected Oslo to reward its commitment to zero-emissions construction sites. The city has recently pushed to have only zero-emission construction sites. This policy had some very remarkable consequences: citizens notice the cleaner air and reduced noise exposure, and the early stage roll-out of Heavy Duty Vehicles and construction machinery will result in an earlier global lift-off for electrification in these sectors that so far has been seen as highly challenging for emissions reductions.

Eric-Mark Huitema,  Director-Generalfor Vehicles at AVERE, commented: “The positive experience of using electric excavators and heavily loaded battery-electric trucks should be shared globally and has started to open the mindset of global leaders in construction equipment to the fact that also in this industry, the future is electric. Electric construction is also helping put the missing pieces of the puzzle in place to enable a truly zero-emission economy, where electric vehicles will have true zero life cycle emissions.

The E-Visionary Award is a way for the World Electric Vehicle Association (WEVA) to recognise cities and regions as E-Visionaries. These are the cities and regions that promote electric vehicles as the sustainable and convenient mode of transportation through their initiatives: they are the trailblazers that make electric mobility a daily reality in the lives of their inhabitants.

Every year, three awards are assigned, one for Europe, one for the American continent and one for the Asian Pacific region. The winner of the awards is decided by the WEVA Member covering the part of the world the award is associated with. For Europe, the association making the decision is AVERE - The European Association for Electromobility.
